You see, I happen to be an economist who also comes from one of Galveston's oldest families...my great-grandparents arrived in town the same year as Colonel Moody (1866). Moody's Investors Service was founded at the turn of the 20th century by John Moody...no relation to the Colonel or his son (AKA Old Man Moody). John Moody is considered the father of modern bond rating methodology, for whatever that's worth. I dare say the Galveston namesakes did better for themselves financially.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03211648025144729733noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3077210.post-84257098058228558272008-04-27T20:02:00.000+02:002008-04-27T20:02:00.000+02:00You know, I think I fucked up. I wonder what you would think of it. I'm reviewing the Library of America Philip Dick collection this July, and so am reading my favorite American sf writer (and actually, besides LeGuin, the only one I know).

As for being a firebrand - who knows? We scatter talk on the intertubes like dandelion seed - but maybe at this very minute, the idea of the return to the articles of confederation is taking root somewhere!Roger Gathmannhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11257400843748041639noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3077210.post-33319825076213151942008-04-26T07:41:00.000+02:002008-04-26T07:41:00.000+02:00and...I am no firebrand. Which is strange, because her novel The Left Hand of Darkness, has to be one of my favorite books of all time.

You do have a point re: Dixie Freebooters. I huess my only responses would be 1. It would take a while for us to get over the breakup, giving the Nicaraguans a break; 2. The Dixie Freebooters wouldn't have a trillion dollar military. But...of course I would expect no nirvanna or peaceful utopia. How can there be in a nation founded on genocide and slavery? (MY cynicism is growing.)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3077210.post-49646088316628410702008-04-24T20:19:00.000+02:002008-04-24T20:19:00.000+02:00brian, you are a firebrand, and I know this is all...brian, you are a firebrand, and I know this is all part of your masterplan to get us back to the articles of confederation. But you underestimate American aggressiveness. Surely Dixie freebooters can both drop bombs on, say, Nicaragua and send armies against the soviet republic of Kalifornia.

By the by, since you are a sci fi reader, you should pick up Angela Carter's The Passion of the New Eve, if you haven't, some time. It is a sci fi vision of the American breakup with some startling sex. You'd like it! I think. Do you like Ursula LeGuin?Roger Gathmannhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11257400843748041639noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3077210.post-87450540396040437692008-04-24T16:50:00.000+02:002008-04-24T16:50:00.000+02:00I actually sorta kinda agree with this. Besides, if there 20 or 30 or 100 little mini-empires within the boundaries of the current US squabbling amongst ourselves, we won't be able to run proxy wars and drop bombs on civillians in Somalia.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3077210.post-70613080318193248922008-04-24T13:41:00.000+02:002008-04-24T13:41:00.000+02:00Ha, TexasSecede.com."Neither the Texas Constitutio...Ha, TexasSecede.com.

"Neither the Texas Constitution, nor the Constitution of the united States, explicitly or implicitly disallows the secession of Texas (or any other “free and independent State”) from the United States.
