I've had this deep desire to have been in NYC on this day, but even watching the inauguration from across the ocean I did get a catch in my throat. It wasn't the pomp and ceremony or even the speeches, it was the faces I saw and something flickering and shining on them. Naive it might well be. But isn't the naivete preferable to cynicism? The former might get bruised and battered but there is something perhaps open and exposed to it, whereas the latter is all too all knowing and not even willing to risk being exposed.
I remember talking to a friend on election night this past November after she had gone to vote in Brooklyn with her two year old daughter in tow. As they were standing in line, she tried to explain to her daughter what was happening. The girl listened, looked around and yelled: people, go decide!
People have the power to redeem the work of fools as a singer sings. What exactly is the other option?
